One of the main reasons the Cubs were a disappointment last year was because they were riddled with injuries throughout the whole season. And it appears that at least one player is already struggling with injuries this year, and were still a little bit over a month away from opening day. That player is Angel Guzman, who ironically was finally healthy for a full season for the Cubs last year.
The Cubs have decided to shut down Angel Guzman for the time being as he feeling discomfort in his right shoulder. Guzman, will be re-evaluated in a couple of days.
If it turns out that Guzman’s injury is serious, the Cubs would then almost be forced to acquire a right handed reliever for the bullpen. They remain interested in Padre’s reliever Luke Gregerson, and the Blue Jay’s Jason Frasor.
Ryan Theriot has a suffered a bruise on his wrist today, as he was hit on the wrist by a fastball from class A pitcher Rafael Dolis. However there were no ill feelings between the two, as the pair both laughed it off.
Other Notes from the Day…
Alfonso Soriano is feeling very good, after having a couple days to test his rehabbing knee. He is showing no signs of discomfort when he is batting, or when he is in the outfield. Soriano has set a personal goal of playing in 150 games this year, a year after he only participated in 117 games.
Esmailin Caridad has secured a spot in the Cubs bullpen. Caridad will likely serve as a late inning reliever for the Cubs this year. Lou Piniella believes that Caridad possesses the “stuff” to be the late inning reliever for the Cubs, and he says that Caridad is never afraid to take the ball.
Ted Lilly, may return to camp tomorrow as he has been out with the flu for most of the week.
