Today, the Cubs have signed a 350 game winner, who was also a 4 time Cy Young Award Winner. That’s right the Cubs have once again signed future hall of fame pitcher Greg Maddux. Although, this time around he is doing a different type of pitching, he will now be pitching ideas and scouting reports to Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry, as Maddux has been signed as a special assistant to the Cubs GM.
Maddux will be instructing Major League players and Minor League players in Spring Training, he also will be assigned to do some scouting over the course of the season. More importantly, he will be heavily involved in player movement, as he will converse with Jim Hendry about pending trades or free agent signings.
Maddux has been highly acclaimed as one of the best thinkers when it comes to the game of baseball, he also helps improve young pitchers on the team, as during his last stint with the Cubs his mentoring of then rookie Sean Marshall was well noted.
Maddux through a statement, said that he is not concerned about what the future has in store for him as far as possibly being a manager one day, he is focused and eager to get underway with his new job.
Maddux, whose number 31 was retired by the Cubs last year, will likely be a first ballot Hall of Famer when he is eligible in 2014.
