Small Consolation
Neither the Cubs nor the Brewers have much left to play for this season. Except bragging rights over each other.
At least that’s one race the Cubs can say they lead. After Monday’s 2-0 win, the Cubs now hold a 7-4 advantage in the season series vs. Milwaukee.
Given the way things have gone for these two clubs offensively, it should’ve been no surprise that they would manage only 2 total runs in the game. Given the way things have gone for the Cubs line-up, it should’ve been no surprise that half their runs would’ve come on a Derrek Lee homer.
The Brewers’ version of Lee, Prince Fielder, went 0-3 on the game with a walk. Prince leads Lee in the battle for second-best offensive first baseman in the division behind Albert Pujols; Lee has the advantage in batting average at .304 to Fielder’s .299, but trails him in homers 39-33 and in RBI 126-98.
Lee and the Cubs also lag behind Prince and the Brewers in showboating, classless walk-off homer celebrations. By a wide margin.
Ryan Dempster gave up only 4 hits to the Brewers. Carlos Marmol slammed the door in the ninth for another save, further cementing his position as the closer for next season.
