D-Lee Injection

Derrek Lee took a couple of days off to experience the birth of his second child, then returned to the line-up refreshed and blasted two homers in a 5-3 win over the Mets.

All such efforts are too little, too late at this point, but it was still cool to see Lee, the Cubs 2009 MVP by a long way, celebrate his joy and happiness by pounding a pair into the seats.  As I said yesterday on Twitter, D-Lee needs to have more kids.

Maybe all the Cubs players should try fatherhood as a motivational tactic.  No, I don’t mean they should find random women and impregnate them.  They should definitely marry the women or at least enter into committed relationships first.  I do not advocate some kind of Travis Henry approach.

Unless it had a chance to deliver a World Series.  Then I’d be on-board.

But back to D-Lee…if you want to have a dark thought, just imagine what the Cubs’ season would’ve been like without his 29 homers and 93 ribs.  It’s been disappointing anyway, but without Lee, it would’ve been some kind of nightmarish Pittsburgh Pirates scenario.

And yes, I have to confess, I was one of the people who doubted Lee coming into the season.  I may even have suggested at some point that the Cubs should look into trading him.  That, in retrospect, was silly.  But, it came from a constructive place.  I was just trying to figure out some way for the team to get a lefty bat into the line-up.

I did it out of love.
