The Cubs were staring down the barrel of a second straight shutout when they finally broke through for a run against the Mets in the 8th inning Friday. This after being shut down for 7 innings by Bobby Parnell, who went into the game with an ERA north of 5.50.
There are offensive woes and then there are offensive woes. Not being able to muster a single run against a pitcher like Parnell, when you are supposed to be fighting to salvage your season, is just about as unforgivable as anything I can imagine.
Of course we’ve known for awhile that this team was done. Emotionally I mean. Just completely wrung out and used up and gone flatter than old soda.
I don’t know why it happened or how it happened, but, it happened. The 2009 Cubs lost their fight. They resigned themselves to mediocrity. They threw in the towel. They cried uncle.
They’re probably glad they’re on the road right now, so they don’t have to listen to the boos. On the 11th, they return to Wrigley, and will have to deal with the angry masses who expected better than what they’ve gotten.
Maybe by then the fans will have lost the will to boo the same way the team has lost the will to play.
