Phil Rogers has read the quotes, he has watched the play, he has witnessed the helmet throwing tantrums…and he thinks it is time for Milton Bradley to go.
“There are three possible solutions for the Cubs,” writes Rogers. “…continued patience and hope, endless headaches while hoping some team is silly enough to deal for him or pay him his money and send him home.
My recommendation: Release him.”
Rogers points out other instances where organizations took decisive action with well-paid players who had become liabilities, namely, the Angels‘ decision to jettison Jose Guillen and Josh Byrnes several years back, and the Diamondbacks‘ move to get rid of Russ Ortiz two seasons ago. Both teams improved in the wake of these amputations.
Rogers wins even more points by saying Sam Fuld should be given a shot at the centerfield job, with Kosuke Fukudome moving to right in place of Bradley. Fuld has the kind of reckless, spunky style that sparks winning teams.
Bradley, on the other hand, is nothing but a whining bitch who will only get worse with time. I agree with Rogers: cut him. Do it today. Do it this instant. And then issue a public apology to Cubs Nation for signing the dumb bastard in the first place.
If Jim Hendry has any problems selling the Ricketts family on the idea of eating the $20 million the Cubs still owe Bradley, just show them some tape of him throwing the ball into the stands with two outs. Or read them some quotes about how Milton’s glad when games only go nine cause then he gets out of Wrigley faster.
I suppose there’s no use lecturing Milton on the difference between his hardships and those suffered by average working people who do not make $10 million a year for sucking miserably at their jobs. He would just get defensive.
Screw him.
