The Cubs got 17 against Pirates pitching on Friday. On Saturday, they only needed 3.
Tom Gorzelanny, back on the mound after taking a grounder off his foot his last start, and a trio of relievers made those 3 runs stand up, holding the hideous Pirates to just 5 hits.
How feeble was the Pirates’ offensive attack? They managed only one hit against Kevin Gregg, a guy who makes almost every save situation into a gut-churning adventure.
The Cubs’ staff combined for 13 strikeouts against Pittsburgh, 8 by Gorzelanny in just 5 innings.
The Cubs’ hitters weren’t clicking like they did Friday, obviously, except for Jeff Baker who continued proving his value by going 2-4 with a solo shot against Zach Duke.
Another encouraging sign: Aramis Ramirez entered the game in the 8th inning as a pinch hitter and got a single. Hopefully this means Aramis will finally be ready to rejoin the starting line-up on Sunday.
The Cubs appear to have pulled out of their tail-spin. Thank you Pirates.
