August Collapse Continues

The Cubs are 4-8 in August after a disheartening 6-1 loss to the Phillies.  They have dropped 5 in a row and 7 of their last 8.  They have gone from being neck-and-neck with the Cardinals to 4 1/2 games back.  Do I need to keep going?  They have been outscored 44-19 in their last 5 (thank goodness for that one 4-3 extra innings loss or things would really look bad).

How horrid has it gotten?  The best thing that’s happened to Cubdom in the last week was the beer-throwing dipwad turning himself in to the cops without a shootout.

Now the good news:  The Cubs’ next six are at home against the Pirates and on the road against the dismal Padres.  And you know how the Cubs love feasting on the crap at the bottom of the barrel.

The other good news is that Tom Gorzelanny, who left his last start after getting hit on the foot by a ground ball, will return to the rotation Saturday.  Also, Ted Lilly says he is ready to go on Monday after some good rehab outings.  Anything that keeps Jeff Samardzija or Sean Marshall from having to start is good.

We’re still waiting to see when Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Zambrano will be able to return.  Maybe when we have all our horses, we’ll be able to make a run.  There’s still a month and a half left.

We have to play a lot better than we did against Philadelphia and Colorado though.  The team’s performance in those two series was, at times, genuinely embarrassing.  The team seems like it’s tottering on the brink of packing it in mentally.

It’s too early for a complete collapse though.  Those don’t normally happen to the Cubs until October.
