The Cubs on Wednesday traded minor league prospect Alberto Alburquerque to the Colorado Rockies in exchange for utility infielder Jeff Baker.
Two things strike one immediately about this trade: 1) the Cubs had a dude named Alburquerque; 2) the Cubs just traded for a guy who was hitting .130 this year before he went on the DL with a hand injury, and hasn’t even come back from his rehab stint yet.
Needless to say, this trade does not represent a solution to the nagging second base issue. Unless Jeff Baker all of a sudden becomes Ryne Sandberg. I hope this doesn’t signal that Jim Hendry has given up looking for a real second baseman, someone who can hit and field.
Actually, the way things have been going for Hendry lately, maybe it’s better if he doesn’t make any major deals.
