The Cubs have started June in fine fashion, winning four of their first six (with a rain-out mixed in), including Tuesday night’s 7-1 beatdown of the Houston Astros (who are now officially hapless). Ted Lilly kept up his All-Star form, pitching 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball, lowering his ERA to 3.00 and raising his record to 7-4. And the offense held up their end (for once), pounding out 16 hits, including 4 from Mike Fontenot and 3 from Geovany Soto. Derrek Lee also remained fairly hot, going 2-3 with 3 walks.
It’s possible that the team has at last navigated its way through its hitting troubles, and will remain consistent through the rest of the season – but, were I Jim Hendry, that hope wouldn’t stop me from looking for a second baseman with a good stick at the trade deadline.
