The Chicago Cubs addressed an obvious need with their first-round selection in the 2026 MLB draft, selecting Ole Miss starting pitcher Cade Townsend. Townsend is a high-upside college pitcher, who should be ticketed for the starting rotation as he ascends through the system.
The two selections the Cubs made after Townsend could be more telling of immediate plans for the farm system. The Cubs took Texas A&M outfielder Caden Sorrell in the second round, followed by slugging first baseman Myles Bailey at No. 75.
Sorrell certainly fits the model of the bat the Cubs love. Outside of the power potential, he has an arm that should keep him in the outfield, competent on base paths, and there's reason to believe the Cubs can fine tune his bat-to-ball skills. Bailey is more of a project, considering his swing is littered with chase, but if the Cubs can correct it, he could be a prolific power hitter from the left side of the plate.
Cubs' Day 1 of 2026 MLB Draft picks may unlock two trade deadline chips
To make one thing clear, the Cubs, and most teams, don't use the draft as foreshadowing for the MLB trade. That said, arrivals of prospects at certain positions could make prospects currently in the system more expendable. Along those lines, there's two prospects could be on thin ice in that regard.
Kevin Alcantara
Even before the 2026 MLB Draft, it's felt like Kevin Alcantara was on borrowed time with the Cubs. During his time in the minors, Alcantara has flashed the ceiling of five-tool center fielder capabe of providing consistent power. The problem is that he hasn't shown that in the majors. Alcantara has yet to record an extra-base hit through his 38 career plate appearances.
If nothing else, Sorrell's arrival to the Cubs system adds to the organization's overall outfield depth. Likely making the Cubs even more comfortable in making Alcantara available in trade talks.
BJ Murray
BJ Murray has made his way back onto the radar of prospect evaluators. After down 2025 season that included a demotion to the Double-A level, he's refined his approach this year with the Iowa Cubs in Triple-A. He's carrying a .980 OPS through 359 plate appearances.
At 26 years old, the best path forward for Murray and the Cubs would be a trade. With Michael Busch at first base, Alex Bregman at third base, and Michael Conforto currently on the roster, Murray is blocked. Rather than risk another regression, the Cubs should sell high on Murray before the deadline while Bailey become the new slugging first base prospect in the system.
