On Friday the Cubs were edged by 4-0 Mets starter Matt Harvey to drop the series opener. On Saturday afternoon, the North Siders took on 0-4 pitcher Jeremy Hefner. The home team countered with streaking starter Scott Feldman. Both pitchers kept the scoreboard filled with zero runs through three. Feldman worked around a pair of one out singles in the top of the first and Hefner stranded a lead off double by Alfonso Soriano in the bottom of the second.

May 18, 2013; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Scott Feldman (46) is congratulated in the dugout during the seventh inning against the New York Mets at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs jumped on Hefner in the bottom of the fourth. Luis Valbuena hit a sac fly with the bases loaded no outs for the first tally and Welington Castillo made it 2-0 with a RBI single. Feldman then came up to the plate and showed that he could do no wrong of late. He hit a double over the Mets outfielders to plate two more with two outs and the Cubs were up 4-0.

Anthony Rizzo hit his 10th homer of the season in the fifth to make it 5-0 and more than enough runs for the hot Feldman. The Cubs righty allowed seven hits and just one walk over 6 2/3 innings of work, with six strikeouts to round out the nice box score line.

Nate Schierholtz added a solo shot in the eighth to give him five on the season and David DeJesus added a two run single to emphasize the rout. The burst of offense was a sight for sore eyes after being held to two first inning runs against Harvey on Friday afternoon. Hector Rondon blew the shut out bid with two runs allowed in mop up duty, but the win was a comfortable one none the less.

After stealing a series victory in Washington over the weekend, the flight back to Chicago must have been real enjoyable. The Cubs carried over the positive momentum into the game against the Rockies on Monday night. The home team jumped on Colorado starter Juan Nicasio for five runs in the first two innings alone and cruised to a three game winning streak.

David DeJesus got the party started with a double to lead off the first and Alfonso Soriano cashed him in with a two run bomb onto Waveland Avenue, his fourth of the season. Rockies left fielder Carlos Gonzalez didn’t even both to turnaround as he was among many that knew the ball was gone as soon as it left the bat.

May 13, 2013; Chicago, IL, USA; Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Travis Wood hits a RBI double against the Colorado Rockies during the second inning at Wrigley Field. Mandatory Credit: Jerry Lai-USA TODAY Sports

Fittingly for the second inning, the weapon of choice for the Cubs offense was the two base hit. Welington Castillo hit a one out double to left and was driven home by pitcher Travis Wood on a double, who has done a little bit of everything in the last two games. Starlin Castro made it 5-0 with a two run double and the Cubs looked like they were going to drop an avalanche of runs on the Rockies.

Instead the Cubs offense relaxed a bit and let their starter Wood operate on auto pilot. The Cubs lefty only allowed a skimpy two hits and three walks in seven innings, allowing the Rockies hitters to get themselves out in the field of play with only two strikeouts. Two of the Colorado runners were erased on double plays and two of the walks came in his final inning of work.

Nate Schierholtz added two more runs with a triple down the left field line that the Rockies Gonzalez could not pinch up against the side wall. Castillo had his second double of the night and was driven in on a two run single by DeJesus in the bottom of the eighth to round out the Cubs scoring.

Carlos Marmol came in to get an inning of work. The bad news? He did give up a solo home run to lose the shut out bid. The good news? He struck out three as well. After a history of wildness, Cubs fans will surely zone in on the home run allowed, but what is being overshadowed is that fact that he threw strikes. With a nine run lead I’m taking my chances with Marmol throwing fastballs over a fat part of the plate as long as he is attacking the hitters instead of avoiding a four pitch walk.

The Cubs picked up their second three game winning streak of the season and continue to nip at the heels of the Brewers in a bid to get out of the NL Central basement.

Nationals starter Gio Gonzalez had a perfect game going through five innings and despite Scott Feldman holding up his end of the pitchers’ duel with just one run allowed in the first, things were not looking bright for the Cubs to pull this one out. Washington scored their lone tally thanks to a pair of doubles in the first, but the Cubs starter was able to get out of a two out bases loaded jam to limit the damage. Feldman would scatter three more hits in his six innings of work while walking three and striking out six. Dioner Navarro, of all people, broke up the perfect no hit bid with an infield single to lead off the sixth inning. However Gonzalez of the Nationals was able to escape the eventual two out bases loaded pickle of his own to keep the shut out and home team lead in place.

May 12, 2013; Washington, D.C., USA; Chicago Cubs teammates Darwin Barney (15) David DeJesus (9) and Ryan Sweeney (6) celebrate after a game against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park. The Cubs defeated the Nationals 2-1. Mandatory Credit: Joy R. Absalon-USA TODAY Sports

The Nationals lefty was pinch hit for in the bottom of the seventh and the Cubs offense made the decision back fire in the eighth. Navarro was the instigator again, producing another lead off single to get the rally started. Travis Wood came in to pinch run for the burly catcher, despite being scheduled to start against the Rockies at Wrigley on Monday night. Despite being on the road, Dale Sveum went the small ball approach to shoot for the tie. He had Darwin Barney execute a sac bunt to advance Wood to second and a pop foul by David DeJesus that Nationals first baseman Adam LaRoche caught with his back to the infield allowed the Cubs pitcher to advance to third with two outs. Starlin Castro then bucked the trend of the team’s failures with RISP and singled up the middle to drive in the tying run.

James Russell shut down the Nationals in the bottom of the eighth despite a lead off walk to Bryce Harper, keeping the score knotted at one into the ninth inning. That set the stage for some final inning drama on Mother’s Day and an interesting series of events followed. Alfonso Soriano singled to start the frame before pinch hitter Julio Borbon followed that up with a base hit of his own. With one out and Welington Castillo at the plate, Soriano and Borbon attempted a double steal. Castillo stood his ground in the batter’s box and the throw to third by National’s back stop Kurt Suzuki tipped off of the hitter’s bat, causing a wild throw. Soriano easily scored for the go ahead run and Borbon ended up at third.

Unfortunately the Cubs offense could not plate the insurance run in the form of Borbon, but the one run lead was all lights out Kevin Gregg needed to nail down the save. His 1-2-3 inning for his sixth save ended with a pair of strikeouts, including one that had Suzuki ejected for arguing balls and strikes. The Nationals catcher may have felt that there was batter’s interference on his errant throw in the top of the inning, and the questionable strike out call may have pushed Suzuki over the edge.

And just like that, the Cubs practically stole not just the Mother’s Day win, but a series win on the road in DC against a 2012 playoff team.
