The long winter is over and baseball has finally returned. The Cubs have their first intersquad spring training game today, but it is still baseball. Before we know it, we’ll be celebrating Opening Day in Chicago, Des Moines, Kodak, Daytona, Peoria, and eventually in Boise and Mesa as well. This is going to be an exciting year for the Cubs both in the majors and on the farm, but particularly on the farm. There are some things happening in the system that no Cub fan will want to miss, and I have a few of them listed for you right here, along with a bit of news.

No one wants to suffer through a miserable season in the minor leagues. Only a fraction of the players on a farm team roster ever make it to the major leagues; no one wants to risk that ultimate goal with a lackluster season. For some players, though, the need to avoid mediocrity is a little more urgent than for others. The reasons for that can vary, but at the end of the season there are some players who will need to look back and see much more good than bad. The 2012 season is no different. There are a number of Cub prospect from whom we need to see some good things this year. For now, let’s just talk about one per team.

We know the Cubs farm system is deep. We know the bulk of the talent is in the low levels of the minors and that 2012 will be an exciting year on the minor league front for that reason. Not so long ago, we also knew that the Cubs farm system was heavy with major league regular style players and thin on star power. The times, they are a’changin’.

Baseball America has, at long last, come out with their Top 100 Prospects list. Eight separate experts from Baseball America’s industry-leading staff compiled their own rankings into a single list, and the results are very encouraging for Cub fans. We were all but assured that three names would make the list. When the curtain rose, however, there were four Cubs on the stage.
