He would be driven in by a Darwin Barney double before new Cub Nate Schierholtz flexed his muscles for his first Spring homer, a solo job.

Starting rotation hopeful Carlos Villanueva had a rough Cubs debut, only lasting 2/3 of an inning while giving up two runs with one hit and two walks. The Cubs offense picked him up in the third inning, tallying four runs compliments of back to back jacks by Darnell McDonaldand Welington Castillo.

Typically, a player can only be returned to an organization if he did not make the 25 man-roster of the team of which he was drafted by in the Rule V draft. But in the case of Schlitter, it was a technicality that brought him back to the Cubs.

The mystery of the Chicago Cubs 40 man roster has now concluded. As we have mentioned numerous times before, after the Cubs signed Kerry Wood they did not make a corresponding roster move. Meaning their 40 man roster stood at 41, one player over the 40 man limit. We all figured that a trade may be looming, and speculated that it might include one of the 4 catchers that the Cubs have on their roster. However, no such trade has ever materialized despite rumored interest in Robinson Chirinos.

As it turns out, there was no trade, and in fact it wasn’t all that newsworthy. The New York Yankees claimed Brian Schlitter off waivers from the Cubs, thus putting the Cubs 40 man roster at 40.

Schlitter appeared in 7 games for the Chicago Cubs and consummated an ERA of 12.38 with 7 strikeouts.
