Chicago Cubs News: The next Vogelbach; Is Baez roster spot in jeopardy?

The Chicago Cubs have talent. At times, it seems a little excessive. It victimized Dan Vogelbach, and his successor in the “nowhere to play” in Chicago is Jeimer Candelario. The winds of trade may blow soon, and Candelario could be on his way out.

The Chicago Cubs lost a solid hitter in Dan Vogelbach. But getting Mike Montgomery in return was well worth it. It was never about Vogelbach’s talent or potential at the big league level. He could play one position–first base– and that seems to be taken. That same problem may show itself again as Jeimer Candelario is scorching Triple-A pitching, but there’s nowhere for him to play. He could be the next name dealt to acquire–well, the next Montgomery?

The Cubs’ Javier Baez still plays slick defense, but he’s regressed a little bit at the plate. A little bit of Devil’s Advocate, should the Cubs consider sending him down to Iowa? It worked last time he was struggling. The fact is, it’s unlikely. But his approach at the plate can’t be ignored.

It’s a problem that you have only when you aren’t winning. Too many men left on base. The Cubs are winning and in first place, but not by much. So is this simply a phase and won’t last long? Or is this a trend that we need to keep an eye on this season?
