Chicago Cubs: New flags will wave around Wrigley Field scoreboard

With each new championship comes bling. While the players for the Chicago Cubs adorn gold trim uniforms and rings, Wrigley Field is not left out.

To the winner goes the spoils. For decades, the winner of major sports championships received rewards and gifts to commemorate their triumph. Parades. Visits to the White House. Covers of magazines, video games. Late night television appearances. The Chicago Cubs brought us some great moments through these events.

While the players receive most of the attention, Wrigley Field is not be left out. This iconic stadium, known for the bricks and ivy, is receiving new decorations. The historic scoreboard in centerfield already holds the apparatus to hoist the “W” flag. Now, it is fit for new flags. Championship flags.

#FlyTheChampionship

We already know about the popular hashtag that is pasted over social media after a Chicago Cubs’ victory. While “#FlyTheW” remains popular, the opening game at Wrigley Field will feature new flags. One will be the 2016 National League Pennant. The other for the World Series Championship. When the wind chases them and they flutter full and proud, not a dry eye will be watching.


The renovations to Wrigley Field continue. The playing surface is devoid of sod, but the warm weather provides time for the field crew to prepare. The seats behind home plate are completed. The sound and video systems are seeing minor tweaks. And, there will be a plaza, the Park at Wrigley, which is expected to be ready for the home opener.


Wrigley Field already is an amazing venue. Many teams, like the Atlanta Braves, build new stadiums; however, the Chicago Cubs are keeping with the original characteristics of their temple. While the outside will be more attractive and inviting, it is what is on the inside that counts. And that will be great baseball.

While this part of the renovation to Wrigley was announced at Cubs Convention, there are four new poles featured in centerfield. We know what two will be. I guess will need to wait until April 10 to see the others.
