Cubs ready for big week against division foes

The Chicago Cubs begin an important week as they play the Pirates and Cardinals in their effort to gain ground in the NL playoff race. They could have reinforcements coming soon as Jorge Soler is continuing his rehab with Class-A Myrtle Beach. Soler is looking to come back from an oblique injury that sent him to the 15-day DL in late August. The Cubs could use every bit of help as they can get as the try to chase down the Bucs and Cards in the Central.

The NFL season opened this past weekend, but some in Chicago have put the Bears on hold for a bit–something that hasn’t been the case in several years. After generally being eliminated from the race by the trade deadline, the Cubs look to have at least a spot in the Wild Card showdown locked and are looking for more. The Bears still have their supporters, but those supporters are doing double-duty while spending a little more time on the Cubs in September than they’re used to.

It’s never too early to start talking free agent possibilities, and this Cubs team could be one of the more active this offseason. We take a look at some potential targets–no, they aren’t all David Price–and see who they could go after this winter to make this club even better. There’s no telling who that one piece might be that puts them over the top.
