After Chris Sale put an end to their nine-game winning streak behind a strong 15 strikeout performance this past Sunday, the Chicago Cubs will begin another seven-game home stand beginning with Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers later on this evening.

Jason Hammel (6-5, 3.10 ERA) will lead this young Cubs (67-49) team in Game 1 of this brief two-game Interleague series having clubbed nine home runs over their previous four games dating back to their 9-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last Thursday.

Hammel was on the mound the day before and held the last-place Brewers to three earned runs on seven hits while giving up two home runs, issuing three walks and recording nine punch-outs in the no-decision. Tonight, he’s going to need to bring everything he has to keep this Tigers team at bay now that Cabrera is back in action.

Taking the mound tonight for the visiting Tigers (56-61) will be 31-year-old right-hander, Anibal Sanchez. Sanchez (10-10, 4.95 ERA) is riding a three-game losing streak that began on July 27 in a contest against the Tampa Bay Rays.

He’s allowed a combined 15 earned runs on 21 hits including six home runs across 18 innings of work, something he needs to watch out for with this young, hungry, and surging North Side club. Sanchez has posted a 15/5 K/BB ratio with an opposing batting average of .284.

This third-place Detroit team has only won four of their last 10 games, but they shouldn’t be overlooked just yet. Chicago still has themselves a four-game lead for the second N.L. Wild Card spot ahead of the San Francisco Giants.

Tonight’s first pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. central time and will air live on ABC 7, MLB Network, WBBM 780.
