Tuesday’s scheduled starters to take mound following PPD game

After a cold, rainy day in Chicago both teams will send the scheduled starters from Tuesday’s game to the mound on Wednesday. The Chicago Cubs hope to atone for a rough Opening Night as they send Jake Arrieta (0-0, 0.00) to the mound. The St. Louis Cardinals will answer with Lance Lynn (0-0, 0.00).

For the Cubs (0-1), Arrieta hopes to build off his solid 2014 season–while continuing his dominance against the Cardinals. In four starts last season, he was 1-0 with a 1.21 ERA. In 22 1/3 innings, he struck out 28 while only allowing three earned runs.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon will look to find more production with runners on base, as the Cubs were 0-for-13 with RISP. It’s the same problem that plagued them last season, but it’s way too early to panic. Maddon will once again bat the pitcher eighth, with Tommy La Stella in the nine spot. Miguel Montero will also get his first start behind the plate with the Cubs.

The Cards (1-0) hope to get an early jump on the upstart Cubs with Lynn on the mound. His 48 wins since 2012 ranks him third among NL pitchers. He was limited in the spring from a left hip flexor strain, but will have no limitations to start the year.

The Cards leadoff man Matt Carpenter will look to change his luck against Arrieta, who has held him hitless in 11 at-bats. No right-handed pitcher has been more effective against Carpenter. A stunning stat considering his .301 average in his career against righties.

The game is scheduled for a 1:20 p.m. CT first pitch. The game will be on ABC 7 in the Chicago area, as well as WBBM 780 for the radio broadcast.
