Morning Marquee: Cubs receiving inquiries on Travis Wood and Welington Castillo

With three proven backstops on the roster, the Chicago Cubs still have some decisions to make in the case of Welington Castillo. After picking up Miguel Montero and signing David Ross, Castillo seems “out of place” in Chicago. Added to that is Travis Wood. There is still talk the Cubs have interest in James Shields, and Cole Hamels is always on a fans wish list. The team has received interest, and the possibility of one or both being traded before Spring Training ends is high.

The Cubs depth in the middle infield became more important yesterday, as former 2012 minor league player of the year Logan Watkins tore his Achilles and will likely miss the season. He’s spent two short stints with the Cubs, and his Triple-A production hasn’t been impressive but he was still expected to compete for a possible bench spot.

The Detroit Tigers Victor Martinez will once again miss time after an off-season workout has led to injury. Martinez of course missed the entire 2012 season, and now a torn meniscus will cost him at least Spring Training, possibly more. The surgery is expected to keep him out for six to eight weeks.
