Morning Marquee: ESPN anchor Stuart Scott loses battle with cancer, dead at 49

We at Cubbies Crib were as devastated as the rest of the sports world to hear of Stuart Scott’s passing. For me, personally, he was one of my favorites. As a kid in high school we constantly were using his catchphrases all day long. “Booyah”, “As cool as the other side of the pillow”, if you watched SportsCenter at all, you knew all of them. His speech at the ESPY’s this year was moving, and now will sit alongside the great Jimmy Valvano’s speech as a testament for those that won’t let cancer destroy them in life.  Our prayers and condolences go out to his family.

The Kansas City Royals have signed former Phillies closer Ryan Madson to a minor league deal. Madson has battled injuries since 2011, failing to pitch in the Majors since then. The oft-injured pitcher will at the least provide depth to the Royals bullpen, and since he was signed to a minor league deal, won’t occupy a spot on the 40-man roster.

Former Cleveland Indians GM Hank Peters passed away at the age of 90 on Sunday. Peters helped revive Indians baseball, helping to build the framework for the Indians success in the ’90’s during his time as GM from 1987 to 1992. Peters was also a longtime GM for the Baltimore Orioles.
