Just a month after St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras died in a car crash, the Chicago Cubs and their fans received some frightening news that reliever Pedro Strop was put in the same life-threatening situation. According to CSN Chicago, Strop was involved in a multi-car accident on Thanksgiving night in the Dominican Republic.

Strop, 29, was with his friend, who has been identified as Yeudy Delgado in a pickup truck before losing control and hitting a wall. Shortly after the car accident was reported, images of the wreckage surfaced on Twitter which was later retweeted by CSN Chicago’s very own David Kaplan.

It is encouraging to hear that Strop was unscathed in the wreck, as was reported by multiple outlets, including ESPN Chicago on Friday.

"“We’ve talked with Pedro’s family, and they’ve told us he’s doing well and resting at home,” Juan Mercado, general assistant manager of the Cibao Giants winter league team, told The Associated Press."

Strop is expected to compete with Hector Rondon for the team’s primary closer job during Spring Training after posting a solid 2.21 ERA with two saves and 71 strikeouts in 65 appearances. He’s proven to be one of the brightest stars in a bullpen that has had some serious problems over the last couple of seasons to date.

As time went on during the 2014 campaign, Strop’s performance on the mound began to get better and better each month despite a horrifying outing in May. In nine appearances in September, the seasoned right-hander worked through 8 2/3 innings, allowing just one earned run off six hits and 12 strikeouts while posting a 1.04 ERA.

Strop’s accident now makes it the third incident involving a baseball player in the Dominican Republic this year. Texas Rangers’ prospect Ronald Guzman was involved in another accident just two days ago which resulted in the death of a local motorcyclist.
