9/1 Morning Marquee: Angels extend AL West lead to 5 games

After jumping out to an early 5-0 lead in St. Louis Sunday afternoon, the Chicago Cubs’ often-impressive bullpen failed to get the job done as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to earn a series split at Busch Stadium thanks to a dominant performance by veteran outfielder Matt Holliday.

Reeling off their sixth straight win Sunday, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim routed the Oakland Athletics at home, and in the process, extended their lead in the American League West to six games – less than two weeks after staring up at Oakland in the standings.

In other Athletics-related news, the club traded for strikeout-prone Chicago White Sox slugger Adam Dunn, hoping to breathe life into an offense that has struggled since trading Yoenis Cespedes to the Boston Red Sox earlier this summer. Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista is locked in, evidenced by his hitting a home run in a fifth straight contest Sunday, bringing his total to 29 on the season.
