Down on the Farm: Jorge Soler homers again

Jorge Soler hit a two-run home run and an RBI double for the Iowa Cubs while Daytona’s and Boise’s comebacks fell short in the Chicago Cubs minor league action Friday.

Iowa Cubs
Iowa 8, Oklahoma City RedHawks (Astros) 5

Soler hit a two-run homer in the third and an RBI double in the sixth behind Dallas Beeler‘s eighth win on the season.

Beeler, an Oklahoma native, made his debut in home state and allowed three runs on nine hits over six innings. He struck out two and walked just one.

Blake Parker allowed a two-out single in the ninth for his only hit over 1 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out two.

Mike Olt went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI. Josh Vitters and Elliot Soto also went 2-for-5 with Soto knocking in a run.

Tennessee Smokies
Mobile BayBears (Diamondbacks) 8, Tennessee 1
Mobile 4, Tennessee 1

Mobile hit four solo homers off Corey Black to take the first game of the doubleheader 8-1.

Black gave up five runs on six hits, walking one and striking out none over only 3 1/3 innings. Albert Almora singled and scored a run in the third.

Game Two
C.J. Edwards settled in after allowed three runs in the first, but the Smokies offense failed to provide run support in a 4-1 loss.

Edwards allowed three runs on three hits, striking out four and walking two over four innings.

Lars Anderson, Luis Flores, and Dustin Geiger were all 2-for-3. Flores scored the lone Smokies run while Geiger hit two doubles.

Daytona Cubs
Clearwater Threshers (Phillies) 8, Daytona 7

Daytona scored five runs, including three on a Chadd Krist homer with two-outs in the top of the ninth to pull Daytona within a run, but Jordan Hankins flew out as the Threshers escaped with a 8-7 win over the Cubs.

Jose Rosario allowed two runs on a pair of solo homers. He gave up seven hits, striking out seven and walking one.

Nathan Dorris relieved Rosario in the seventh and allowed six runs on five hits to take the loss. Dorris outing was bookended by solo home runs while he walked one and struck out none.

Krist’s homer was his fourth of the year and he was 2-for-5, Rock Shoulders was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks while scoring two runs.

Billy McKinney also went 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI, and run scored. Dan Vogelbach went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI while Jacob Hannemann was 2-for-4.

Kane County Cougars
Kane County 6, Cedar Rapids Kernels (Twins) 5

Jacob Rogers hit a bases clearing double in the first, Danny Lockhart doubled in a pair of runs, and Cael Brockmeyer singled in the game-winning run in the eighth for the win.

Michael Heesch entered with a four-run lead, but gave up three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Marco Carrillo entered in the ninth with a runner on second and one out, but he walked and hit a batter to load the bases with two outs. Carrillo struck out the next batter for his second strikeout of the game and first season on the season.

Jonathan Martinez allowed two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out none over three innings. Michael Wagner pitched the next four innings to take the win. He gave up only two hits and struck out five.

Rogers was 2-for-4 with a run scored, Lockhart was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Brockmeyer was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Chesny Young was 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Shawon Dunston was 2-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Boise Hawks
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Giants) 4, Boise 3

Justin Marra and Jesse Hodges hit back-to-back doubles in the top of the ninth to put the Hodges, the tying run at second base, but he was stranded as the Hawks fell 4-3.

Marra was 3-for-4 and scored a run while Hodges was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Trevor Graham allowed four runs on six hits over five innings for the loss. He struck out four and walked two.
