The Chicago Cubs added speed to the top of their batting order Tuesday night by placing Emilio Bonifacio at the leadoff spot in the three-game series opener against the Padres.

Bonifacio missed five weeks due to an oblique strain, batted .261 with 13 stolen bases in 61 games before the injury. He was activated Tuesday, with second baseman Darwin Barney designated for assignment.

Arismendy Alcantara will bat second in his ninth start since his July 9 promotion.

Left fielder Junior Lake and third baseman Mike Olt will get a rare start as Chris Coghlan and Luis Valbuena get the day off. Coghlan is batting .412 (21-for-51) in July while Valbuena is 3-for-26.

Kyle Hendricks gets the start on the mound for the Cubs in his first appearance at Wrigley Field. Hendricks made his major league debut in Cincinnati earlier this month, he gave up four earned runs on five hits and one home run in the no decision.

The Padres traded third baseman Chase Headley to the New York Yankees in exchange for two players and have left-hander Eric Stults on the mound, who has lost eight of his last nine decisions.
