Welington Castillo participating in rehabbing baseball activities

Chicago Cubs starting catcher Welington Castillo, who is on the disabled list with rib cage inflammation has begun participating in baseball activities in Mesa, Ariz, reports MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat.

"Castillo took 25-30 dry swings, 15-20 swings off a batting tee and did some running, Renteria said Wednesday.The Cubs have missed Castillo’s bat, as well as his play calling. Chicago’s catchers are batting a combined .206, and Castillo was hitting .242 with five home runs and 21 RBIs over 43 games before being sidelined."

Eli Whiteside, 34, was called up from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding roster move and was put in the lineup when John Baker, 33, was struck in the throat by a foul ball. Whiteside is hitless in 12 at-bats as entering Thursday. Baker, entered Thursday batting, .159 over 69 at-bats started against the Pirates Thursday.

Whiteside was hitting .171 with three home runs and 13 RBIs over 33 games at Iowa before he was called up.
