REPORT: Chicago Cubs sign third-round catcher Mark Zagunis

The Chicago Cubs have signed third-round pick Mark Zagunis of Virginia Tech to a $615,000 deal, which is under the $714,900 pick value, reports MLB.com’s Jim Callis.

Zagunis, a finalist for the Johnny Bench award, present to the top collegiate catcher, was a three-year starter at Virginia Tech. Cubs’ first-round, fourth overall pick Kyle Schwarber (Indiana) is also a finalist.

Zagunis started in all 53 games for the Hokies and was ranked in several ACC categories including, third in batting average (.388), fourth in slugging percentage (.495), and fifth in runs (141) in his junior season.

He also has shown versatility having played eight games in right field and one in center and left along with three as designated hitter. This year he led the Hokies in batting average (.330), runs scored (44), hits (69), second in slugging percentage (.426), RBIs (39), doubles (10), triples and home runs (two), total bases (89), walks (32), and stolen bases (16).
