Down on the Farm: Daytona Cubs win on Tim Saunders’ grand slam

While the Chicago Cubs were rained out their two Class A affiliates split their games with the Daytona Cubs picking up a comeback win.

Iowa Cubs
The I-Cubs were off today and will host Round Rock (Rangers) tomorrow.

Tennessee Smokies
The Smokies were also rained out today against Jackson (Mariners). The game will not be rescheduled.

Daytona Cubs 6, Charlotte 2
Tim Saunders hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to lift the Daytona Cubs (12-24) to a 6-2 win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs (Rays).

Yao-Lin Wang gave up two runs both in the first (one earned), three hits, struck out four and walked three over 4 2/3 innings.

Albert Almora tied the game with a two-run home run in the sixth. It was is second home run this season and he went 2-for-4 on the day.

Zack Godley earned his first Florida State League win by pitching the final two innings and allowing only one hit.

Saunders’ grand slam was also his second home run of the season and he went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Beloit 2, Kane County Cougars 1
The Beloit Snappers (Athletics) hit a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning and added another run for the 2-1 win over the Cougars (26-13).

Starter Juan Paniagua (0-2) took the loss after he gave two runs in the fourth. Paniagua allowed four hits, struck out three and walked four over 3 2/3 innings.

The Cougars bullpen kept the Snappers off the board as they retired all 13 batters. Justin Amlung struck out three in 3 1/3 and Tyler Bremer struck out none, but pitched a perfect eighth.

Catcher Cael Brockmeyer recorded half of the Cougars’ hits as he was 2-for-4 at the plate.
