Early Monday morning, Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports reported that long-sought Cuban defector Yoenis Céspedes has agreed to terms with the Oakland Athletics. The four-year deal is worth a reported $36 million. The Miami Marlins and the Chicago Cubs were believed to be the front runners, with Miami taking the spotlight in the past week.
In the meantime, Theo Epstein and the Cubs have turned their attention to 19-year old outfielder Jorge Soler, who is touted as a potential power threat in right field, and ran a 6.7 – 60 in a workout last week, which is above average for most Major League players. Soler is expecting to draw a contract in the $20 million range, according to reports.
Last week, the Cubs signed left handed pitcher Gerardo Concepcion, another 19-year old Cuban defector. The deal is yet to be made official. MLB.com reports indicate the Cubs would be willing to spend as much as $27.5 million to land Soler.
