Cubs add Millar to Mix for Bench Spot
The Cubs have reached an agreement with free agent 1B/3B Kevin Millar on a minor league deal that includes an invite to spring training. Millar is looking forward to competing for a bench spot for the Cubs. In order to win a spot, he would have to beat out Micah Hoffpauir (Which is likely) and/or Chad Tracy.
Millar is one of the self proclaimed “idiots” of the 2004 Boston Red Sox team that one the World Series. Millar struggled last year with the Blue Jays as he posted as he posted a .223/.311/.363 line while hitting 7 home runs and driving in 29 runs.
Based on performance Millar may have a troublesome time trying to beat out Chad Tracy for a bench job. But if the Cubs factor clubhouse leadership into the competition then Millar would have a good chance at making the squad.
This move continues the growth of speculation that Micah Hoffpauir could soon be moved by the Cubs, as in the past week the Cubs have added two guys that are capable of taking Hoffpauir’s spot from him on the team. So I think that it is likely that we will see Hoffpauir get traded soon, or he will start the year off in Iowa with the Cubs triple A affiliate.
