Kevin Gregg Update: He’s Still the Closer, But…

Posted by: danzinski

Lou Piniella assured us that Kevin Gregg is still the Cubs‘ closer, despite back-to-back blown saves, including one where he surrendered homers on consecutive pitches to lose the game.

I’m sure Lou wasn’t lying when he said that.  However, Rotoinfo just informed us that Piniella will rest Gregg for the next few days to give his “tired arm” a break.  Carlos Marmol will be the closer until Gregg is ready to go again.

We do not believe that this constitutes a reversal of policy on Lou’s part.  It just means that, for a few days, Marmol will pitch in the 9th instead of Gregg.  And if Marmol is completely dominant in that role?  If he goes out there like the second coming of Dennis Eckersley, making hitters look like chumps with his devastating stuff?

I guess we’ll see whether Gregg gets his job back.
